SUV driver kills pedestrians on sidewalk
Even the sidewalks aren’t safe when vehicles veer onto them. This happened recently in Brooklyn, New York, resulting in the death of a young woman. The young woman, 30, was an art curator.
She was a resident of Brooklyn Heights and was walking in the Fort Greene area at the time of the crash. She was walking on the sidewalk with her boyfriend. An SUV driver, going southeast on Fulton Street, saw a bus pull into a stop right in front of them at approximately 5:28 p.m.
In an effort to avoid crashing into the bus, the driver of the SUV went up onto the curb at high speed. It was at that point that the driver hit the young woman with the SUV. According to witnesses, the young woman was knocked to the sidewalk and lay there bleeding heavily after having been smashed into by the SUV. The witnesses say that she lost a lot of blood and was very pale.
Bystanders were shocked, with many of them screaming in terror as medical professionals came to the scene and tried to help. They reportedly pumped her chest and then took her on a gurney in the hope of providing additional medical attention at Brooklyn Hospital Center. It was too late, as her injuries were fatal, and she died as a result of them. Her boyfriend had minor injuries as did others at the scene.
The driver of the SUV, 39, has been charged with driving without a license. Additional charges may be pending since the NYPD’s collision squad is probing the accident. This case serves as a reminder that being anywhere near vehicles can pose a danger, and drivers need to be aware of everyone around them, including pedestrians on sidewalks.
